How We Grade

The Condition GUIDE

Every piece we sell is pre-owned and gently used unless noted otherwise. Each one is inspected in-house and graded on a five-point scale — conservatively. When in doubt, we grade down.

Pristine

Unworn or near-new. No visible signs of wear inside or out.

Often store-fresh: plastic still on hardware, corners untouched, interior spotless. The closest thing to new that pre-owned gets.

Excellent

Gently used with only the faintest signs of wear — you'd have to look for them.

Carried or worn a handful of times. Hardware bright, corners sharp, interior clean. Any wear takes deliberate searching to find.

Very Good

Gently used and well cared for. Light wear visible on close inspection.

Light surface scratches on hardware, the first hints of softening at corners, or minor interior marks — all visible in our photos.

Good

Loved and well kept. Moderate wear consistent with regular use, shown in the photos.

Honest wear: rubbed corners, patina on vachetta, scratches on hardware or metal, interior use marks. Structurally sound and photographed without flattery.

Fair

Visible wear and character. Honestly photographed and priced accordingly.

A piece with a past — noticeable wear that the price fully reflects. Every flaw is photographed and described so there are no surprises.

The Inspection

What we look at

  • Corners & edges

On bags and leather goods, the first place wear shows — rubbing, softening, edge-paint wear.

  • Hardware & metals

Scratches, plating wear, and tarnish — on clasps, chains, zippers, and jewelry settings alike.

  • Surfaces & materials

Scuffs, stains, and color transfer on leather and canvas; pulls on silk; chips or clouding on enamel and stones.

  • Interiors & linings

Lining condition, pen marks, odor, and pocket wear.

  • Handles, straps & chains

Darkening from handling, cracking, stretch, and stitch or link integrity.

  • Function

Zippers, closures, hinges, clasps, and movements — everything should work the way the house intended.

On every listing

Each product page shows the grade on a five-point meter, and anything piece-specific — spotting, patina, a scratch worth knowing about — is written out under the Condition section. Included extras like dust bags, boxes, and authenticity cards are itemized under Accessories.

Authenticity is a separate, stricter bar: condition describes wear; genuine is non-negotiable. Read the Authenticity Promise.
